Generations of my forebears worked these grain fields,
engineered steam trains on the Great Northern rails,
taught children in a Dakota one-room schoolhouse, 

brought me up in a thriving Midwest city. 
I am firmly an American. 

I own my own house in a senior community,
am financially secure with some annuities.
what do I have to fear? 

I'll tell you what:
having to hear the sobbing of bewildered children calling for mommy
on the six-o-clock news, and images of detention centers that recall
the old newsreels of my youth
with a voice-over asking how this happened.

Like Leonard Cohen would say or write, everybody knows.  But we, as a nation, have grown quite cold.  We are losing our heart, our soul... but then again, when did heart and soul make money.
Guess we must be suckers and losers to care............

According to the estimated figure I've seen slightly less than 60% of those eligible to vote actually did.  This suggests around 40% of your population either didn't give a rat's arse who got in, or perhaps thought both candidates were equally unworthy of their vote.

We're no better here in the UK, so I'm not being smug or casting judgement.  It's the disenfranchisement of the ones who can't be bothered to vote that bothers me.

Indar, you paint a grim picture.  Not one you want, I know.  But well described.

AJ, and Indar, bruised idealists perhaps, but never losers.  Hang onto your own sense of worth, whatever the numbers say.

Thanks, Gyppo.  Truly, we are not losers or suckers, but some of our cynical and callous leaders and mouth pieces are promoting the idea.  We will not lose our faith, but what and how this thinking bludgeons our youth is what worries me.
Yes, keep the faith, and stay kind to one another.
