Pet Sounds (children's poem)

Post by TrevorConway » Thu Jun 09, 2022 2:03 am

My granny says that music
was much better in her day.
“Such melody and lyrics!” she says.
“They even had better hair!”
“Back when I was young,” she says,
“we’d go and buy a record
you could play for years and years,
and still you wouldn’t be bored.”

“All the groups were fab!” she shouts
with a girly look in her eye.
“My favourite were the Beatles,
but I loved The Monkees, too.”
Then, she goes on to list them all:
The Eagles,
The Byrds,
The Spiders from Mars.
There was even a group called The Animals.

“Granny,” I say, “it seems to me,
the music you speak of was made by creatures
much smarter than we have today.
I couldn’t imagine a beetle
strumming guitars or playing drums.
But tell me,” I say, leaning closer,
“when did humans begin to play?”

Fun write, Trevor. Great twist on a couple of universal truths--the music was always better "back in the day" and rock bands will always choose names that make no sense!
