Hi,
Don't know much, but here's what I have. "Pinion pines line the inside" is incredibly well done, maybe it's the meter of it, but it flows so well in my opinion. Later, the line "keeps pace, climbs down the mountain" to me seems unnecessary and clunky, though. Almost stands on its own. Maybe there's meaning I can't construe. Altogether, it's a great piece regardless of my personal qualms

Driving Down Mount Palomar
Re: Driving Down Mount Palomar
Hi Ike,
The line that bothers you is about a phenomenon taught in "perspective for artists 101". The horizon line is always at eye level. So if one is at 5000 ft on a mountain and can actually see to the ocean (which does happen on Palomar when the air is very clear) there is the edge of the world straight out from that elevation. Hint: If you really want to get a look at it you'd better pull over to a view point or you will die. I'm told there are days when one can see itty-bitty ships out there.
Because the telescope is still tracking stars etc there are restrictions on light, and to the best of anyone's ability, air pollution. The public can look at the actual workings of the dome which is built on circular RR tracks. I love that kind of stuff. Great campground up there as well.

South Grade Road, the stretch of San Diego County Route S6 going from State Route 76 to the summit, is popular among motorcycle riders and sports car drivers due to its challenging nature[13][14] (over 20 hairpin turns over the distance of less than 7 mi (11 km)
