April 6

Letting Go

My mother eeked out another day.
She is one-hundred-two years and one month old.

I take turns with my brother, his son: home hospice.
Her bed cranked up at the headboard, is flanked
by a commode on one side
a table stacked with fresh diapers and bed pads on the other.

Her meds are lined up on her spinet
crouched silently against the wall.
A year ago she was no longer able to use
a cordless telephone, we could not explain why
there was no dial tone so we got her a big-button plug-in.

She started watching the same two movies over and over:
Picnic and Titanic, so romantic,
Kim Novak, such a beautiful girl.

Now there are two mothers who take turns
on different days. One wakes up and talks to me
when I arrive, enjoys her lunch, even laughs
while we reminisce.

The other lies stiff with fixed stare, open mouthed,
preparing.

Day 6

 Waste

Love flows
an emotion unstoppable yet anxious
in search of fertile ground
warm arms

Hidden by early April snows
Spring remains unable to take root
as Gaia struggles
her lifeblood purged    splashed    wasted
sumped seasonal from the base
washed away over frozen surface

Heart pumped love too often spent
spattered on rocks
lavished on barren    cold
waste

No arms to hold    comfort    enfold

Maybe it's the time of year

Indeed Aj, spring is a time of yearning in my experience. Thank you for your kind words.

Tracy, appetites of invention--great observation

I wish there was a "Like" button here.  I'm trying to read the poems I'm encountering in this 30 day quest but there is only so much time and responding within a thread is a little awkward unless you follow right behind the poem you have read.  So much good poetry out here.

Rosy Buttons

The ethereal bloom on her cheeks,
rosy buttons only babies can wear,
jiggles when she laughs.

Two different challenges:
24 syllable challenge with prompt: ethereal
and prompt: bloom

Missed a day yesterday, darn it, unavoidable rl concerns. If I can, I'll try to put up two today, as I really wanted to complete the challenge this year!

One star review

After you take your tour in Hades
laundry is important. Daily wear,
bedclothes smell of char, skin
still pink and weeping. Give it
a bit, open a window. Before long
daisy fresh again, smooth as a
baby's proverbial. Now's the time
she calls from her hot resort: help
me, I am lost
and show me where
to go, how to get home
.
You share, ears, palms burning-
thread a hair-fine line through
the phone, cool as ice and
hope it is enough.
