Did I hear you say you can’t write a poem?
Really, you know, it’s not that hard.
In fact, I’d say, just let your mind roam,
and soon, you’ll have your first word.
An idea is usually the initial seed,
then you think of what you want to say,
and how to say it, what tone you need,
till it grows like a tree day by day.
Make it easy for your reader to see
just what you mean by filling your lines
with imagination; for example, a pea
is a pearl dropped from branches and vines,
But most of all, make your reader think,
’cause wonder is like a source for thought,
and poems can teach you wonderful things,
without feeling you’ve ever been taught.
You might take the time to rhyme
or litter your lines with alliteration,
but it’s your choice – it’s not a crime
to pursue other avenues of imagination.
And if you still find you can’t begin
to write your poem, just sit and read.
The words will seep unseen through your skin –
a little influence is all you need.
So, don’t ever let me hear you say,
“I’m giving up!” when you become disheartened.
Instead, write it down on a page.
