Summer Solstice

Post by indar » Tue Jun 22, 2021 10:03 am

Summer Solstice

Now it all goes into reverse:
palm tree shadows creep
their way back to the street;
light slants up the walls
of the south-faced sunroom.
Soon I'll need to flip the switch
to measure water for morning coffee
and the nightly news
will glow from the TV
in ever-growing darkness.

Neatly done Linda, though I am of the opinion to enjoy the sunshine for however long it lasts. Particularly like palm tree shadows creep/their way back to the street.

best

I agree but no one can accuse me of not being a realist :D Thanks Phil

I really like the first three lines in particular. I can really see it.

I agree with Phil's points.
I'm still waiting for Summer to happen, and it might not! So quit your belly-aching...your sun is guaranteed, we
had a high of 15 C today under a thick blanket of clouds
Nice read. You 'show' your intent adroitly.

Thanks Dave, I liked those lines as well.

In truth Colm, I believe California is heaven on earth after Minnesota weather. A day rarely goes by that I don't remember how grateful I am to live here. Thanks.

Don't know about San Diego or Stepaside, but my personal experience has been that after a long winter and summer seems to be catching its stride, BOOM! -- and the days are getting shorter.  Doesn't mean summer is done -- there is a lot left, but the irony of the clock ticking is what makes this poem.

Cheers.

Here on the south side of the planet it's just gone mid-winter so it's the reverse of your reverse but I know what you mean by the shift of seasons and its markers. Time. It's always later than we think. My only suggestion with this poem is to stop watching the fear porn known as the nightly news...

Exactly Tracy and that's only part of it for me. I've always had a sense of "the swing of the pendulum"---retreating backwards--rather than of the annual cycle. Thanks for the comments.

Hey Mark! I quote a character in a movie who repeated a mistake over and over no matter how often her friends advised against:

You're right, You're right, you're absolutely right, I know you're right, I can't help myself.

Thanks for the read and comments. I know winter is your down time in the landscaping business so I hope we see you around more often.

...in ever-growing darkness... sounds about right as metaphor too... I confess to also watching (online) snatches of legacy media in some fascination as the domestic chapter of the War on Humanity unfolds and  accelerates in the US with so much going on. Hm. The richest country in the world is borrowing money from itself at the rate of 17 million dollars a minute. The mind boggles.

I haven't done any landscaping or stonework since leaving the mountains six years ago. I'm earning a crust as a general contractor in a touristy seaside village these days. Always busy but just laying a little low right now as the Delta update of Covid-19 overflows the hospitals in the Western Cape.
