Id

Post by Matty11 » Mon Jun 14, 2021 12:10 am

The alter ego births in hunger,
    gnaws a knotted pipe
    behind the pumping machine,
escapes in inky regret, perfumes over
    chessboard thought.
    It smells of citrus.

    And when this new born
    rolls gambits across the heart,
    fervent, frantic, flawed -
the ego armed with fountain pen,
clinging like an Acme fool  -
then the write of cartoons beckons.

    And if this animation
    should infuse the spiral stairs,
find breath along silky synapses -
    its red tongue
    cleaving commotion -
    where would the connections go?

    Litter meanders over the ocean,
    ego coupling with alter ego,
and with an impulsive click -
    the waves shiver
    shadows inked in motion,
    animator and animated.

Hey Phil
Well these two last two poems have been ploughing a new furrow. They certainly make the reader work and give much to ponder and untangle within the images. It is always fascinating when a poet stretches into new pastures and opens up other angles. There is something almost 'Mark-Like' about the peom.

Philosopher Phil :)
I read this as a perfect storm where someone combines and exposes their alter ego AND their id.
They then lose all sense of themselves. The exposure of their 'real' selves results in a complete loss of identity, they become caricature.
An interesting, intriguing and unusual poem, thanks for posting it :D

On first read I'm picking up references to specific characters such as Wiley Coyote who orders various devices from the Acme company all of which backfire on him. The pipe --popeye?

I'm guessing this is about international political figures and the ridiculous games they play and I can think of one buffoon in particular whose irrational "litter" befouls the shores of other countries.

I could be wrong.

I will continue to read and puzzle over this one and enjoy doing it.

Thanks Dave, Colm, and Linda. I was thinking of the individual identity/identities, the battles/drivers within, the controlling and uncontrolled behaviours. Of course, my poem is just a caricature expression of such confusing complexities :D

best
