Email to a Friend

Fifteen and a half hands can make for
a consequential horse; I know not what
this might mean in inches for flora.
Still, on instructions from my wife,
please tell your wife the jade plant,
given and received as a gift, flourishes,
burgeoning in a banquet of sunshine.
We don’t know their language, seamless
weaving of zoetic threads, the rules
of their balletic colloquies. We know
enough to take instruction, if we chance
to understand the words. And this time I do.

Nice poem Tracy.
Took an extra read or two to get it.
The 'man talk' opening sets it up well. The transition from plant to genuine appreciation of his SO is touching. Your SO must be as delighted as I am with this poem.
We don't know their language is fab, and what follows, sweetens the deal.

I thought this one deserved more than one reply, methinks it was lost in the recent maelstrom.

Hi Tracy,
Like Colm, it took me a while to appreciate the poem. The surface of balance, measurement, distance piqued my interest and led me to re-read. The hook became the wife: the communication through the husband, the reasoning for that; the communication of the gift and that 'boast' of sunshine. I wondered if there was a breach in the friendship and the gift was an elegant communication of reconciliation...and yet, the e-mail is between the husbands. Perhaps this is not the case and just a familiar, ordinary addition of wife intrusion. But then I'm a male, on the outside of 'balletic colloquies' :D

muchly enjoyed

Phil
