Brighton

is the most hipster city in the world
according to the barista who prepares
my creamy flat white below a shark.
An oily bearded guy sipping Americano
slouches with skateboarders among vintage
camisoles and bespoke jewelry,
glamour, nylon and artifice free;
Ella Fitzgerald bares her soul to us.

Eat you heart out Portland, or Miami
or rather devour crispy tofu
and pumpkin and sage arancini
without shame, washed down
with crafted beer you can ill afford.

All of this with a smile
for life's too short and anyway,
here in Brigton, even war was lovely!

Fun read Dave.
They get ridiculed so much. But fair play to them I say.
They are interesting to observe, and the world would be a boring place
if we all dressed the same way :)

Amusingly observed Dave and yes, agreeing with Colm, that distraction, as always, is a survival strategy.

It would be a sad world if writers/poets had no time for 'people watching' or worse still no 'others' to watch.

I last visited Brighton  20 years ago, and, despite having been a seaside resort for many many years the place had something of a Brigadoon quality about it.  It's quite easy to believe it doesn't exist unless you happen to be there to observe it, that once the train leaves the station it whisps away into nothing until the next train arrives.

An unassuming romp -- Portland, Miami, tofu and Brighton in one shot -- love it.

Thanks Tracy. A bit of fluff as a poem.
