Unclean

Post by Dylan di Vilde » Wed Apr 01, 2020 2:21 am

Where once I’d stroll alone
unnoticed and unknown,
now people quake in fear
whenever I draw near.
Great danger do I broach -
they quail at my approach.
Their downfall they forebode
as they swiftly cross the road
and even turn their head
as if that stops the spread.
So every time I’m seen
I feel like I’m Unclean.
It’s saddening to know
that I could sink so low.

But what about the nerve
of those who do not swerve?
those social distance cheaters
who pass within 2 metres,
the dirty and diseased
who’ve probably just sneezed,
the sickly and unscreened
whose clothing goes uncleaned.
How tainted might they be?
And they’re infecting me.

And so I’ve half a mind
to drag one foot behind
wrap my head in sacking,
as if a nose I’m lacking,
I’m leprous, I smell
so heed my warning bell.

To make it very clear
that no-one should come near.
Can germs, they’ll wonder, jump
from an unhygienic stump?
They’ll fear to see my face
and I’ll get lots of space.
And if they don’t disperse
they might catch something worse.

Dylan - this is a wonderful bit of writing.  I love how you weave it and where you take it.

Why don't you join the NaPo 2020 nuts - National Poetry Month board.  Just create a topic and that will be where you can post each of your April poems by just clicking on "reply" - a thread all your own with all your writes.

Anyway, I love this poem.

The doggone truth in doggerel always makes me smile.
