Feck that!

In a shed, concealed
under the Western Red Cedar deck
I build 20 years ago,
spiders hang or cling prolific.

Cotton sacks bulge and decorate
this damp, rotting nursery.
Offspring to continue the lineage, or
in leaner times, to consume.

I should tear the whole thing down
but a supporting deck beam collapsed,
and rests on a roof
which already aches
under its own weight.

A civilisation's destiny awaits my decision.
Most will perish in the shed's dismantling
and possibly mine
under several tons of wood
if, in the process, other beams fail.

Above, on my once beautiful deck
a garden table lists hard to port.
To a stranger, sitting in our kitchen
it might appear strange,
and it does.

But I've become fond of it all,
this process, the dismantling
tempered by observations
that suggest I should
listen to the other voices
that scream more in unison
as I age...
'Feck that!'

Offspring to continue the lineage, or
in leaner times, to consume.

The eternal cycle of nature.

I like it, Colm ;-)

Having watched Dad's once new garage slowly succumb over about forty five years, with minimal maintenance and only limited 'patching up', I can understand this growing reluctance to 'tamper' with a natural process.  A semi-morbid fascination in wondering how much longer it can stay standing.

In the end I moved away and let the council deal with it.  Some of my former neighbours tell me it was like losing a landmark.

The new tenant has neither garaqe nor shed, just a gravelled over 'front grass' where he keeps a steady procession of distinctly 'Pikey' vans.  He's a Shedless Wonder, a man for these modern times.

Colm - I really like this... but I don't know why I am commenting, because Gyppo said it all and much better I ever could.   8-)

I enjoyed this too Colm. The testosterone male expletive narrows the poem, devalues the tone of reflective wisdom, but perhaps that was the intention. A viewpoint on idle gods.

cheers

Hi Colm :)

I love this, laughed aloud  :D  Feck that indeed...it sounds unsafe, and I say hire it out without hesitation! Love that you've written such a lovely poem about it all, for our enjoyment - thanks
