Re: improvised
Dave, Very nice seasonal poem. You had me at fledgling year. I would never have thought to describe a year with that word, but, having seen it, it's perfect. Enjoyed the fresh-faced squirrels too. They've been particularly busy this last week, and I saw a very small one, still learning just how fa...

Re: Means
Strange people. I've met two in my life. Charming but cold. Very cold. For some reason neither of them liked me. One of them had a local reputation as a scary dude. Took him about five seconds at our first meeting to realise it simply didn't work on me. Each to his own, as long as he didn't i...

Re: Cousins' Gathering.
First proper gathering since Covid. Some caught it and survived, most of us managed to avoid it. Our Ex-Pat cousin nearly decided to live full-time in Thailand with his wife, but after six months there has retired 'back home'.

Cousins' Gathering.
Cousins' Gathering The blood tie counts, bringing easy familiarity despite long absences. Conversation flows easily, dipping in and out, picking out disparate threads hearing all or one as the hours pass. Favourite old stories retold, new adventures added, re-compiling the family narrative. Burnish...

The Day Donald Died
Tracy's piece about Kennedy, triggered a recollection of my own. ===== The Day Donald Died (Coniston Water, January 4th, 1967) When Bluebird flipped on Lake Coniston, and stopped his life, his relentless pursuit of world records, it seemed impossible. I remember seeing a picture, his wife stood on t...

Re: Rootbound
I love the image of your boisterous garden, the volunteer plants 'muscling in' and making a mockery of the planned tidiness and order. Had to smile at 'the sacred vagaries of cosmic happenstance'. Life is full of these, no matter what we may have planned ;-) Thoroughly enjoyed. One query: Tomato c...

Re: It's not really a poem, but...
Tracy and Dave, This was one of those odd little bits which forced itself into my life recently, and I'll admit I'm not 100% sure where it was taking me. But it wouldn't go away ;-) I guess there's a wry recognition of the fact that we are all a flickering flame. Sometimes we burn strong and brigh...

Re: sorrows to come
Dave, I understand the sentiment, know the feeling. If I'm lucky I may see my Grandaughter grow up, but statistically I'm unlikely to ever see any great grandchildren. Tracy may have a point about the relationship of the first line to the rest. I tried reading it aloud and it doesn't quite gel for...

It's not really a poem, but...
...I think the poets may 'get' this ... The Flickering Flame . I occasionally light a small candle to mark the passing of someone I respected or admired, even if I never met them in everyday life. Mum used to do this, and it seems I've inherited the habit. It's a strange and eclectic...
